Maine is known for its dramatic coastline, with fresh lobster, unique lighthouses, and quaint fishing harbors. However, a truly hidden secret to many visitors are its stunning lakes scattered throughout the state offering miles and miles of excellent kayaking opportunities. On this trip we are venturing to the Western lakes region, home to a half dozen lakes all within the confines of several mountain ranges and interconnected to each other. Much of the land surrounding these lakes is preserved land which provides a refuge for an abundance of wildlife including moose, deer, fox, and other mammals, not to mention the plethora of birds that proliferate here. This region offers a wide variety of not only paddling opportunities but also other attractions to the area including amazing scenic overlooks with incredible vistas, opportunity to enjoy a dip in the “bottomless” pool created by cascading waterfalls, chance to stretch your legs on the numerous hiking trails, and of course, an opportunity to enjoy the local galleries and shops that line the historic Main st.
Wake to the sounds of loons on the pond just behind our lodging. Grab a cup of coffee, sit out on your back deck, and take in the early morning activities of ducks, herons and other visitors to the pond. Picnic lunches with lots of fresh vegies and fruit will be prepared each day by H2Outfitters’ Head Honcho, Cathy Piffath. Rangeley’s restaurant establishments support local farmers as much as possible which is evident in the unique entrees offered at many of them that we will visit. After dinner, enjoy a walk to the lake, watch the sunset or visit the local shops.
