Experience our backyard playground, the picturesque waterfront community of Harpswell, Maine. Not known to many this gem of a location once discovered lures visitors to its shores time and time again. The Harpswells have a long history of fishing and lobsering and today is still an active working waterfront. The beauty and solitude of this often overlooked area, has attracted authors, poets, and explorers to its shores. Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Arctic explorer Admiral Robert E. Peary, are just a few of the notable names who once lived here. A highlight of this area is paddling beside and beneath the unique Cribstone bridge that connects Orrs and Bailey island. The cribwork design of the large granite blocks is an architectural marvel which is fun to see up close from the seat of your kayak. Take part in a day trip to Eagle Island, once summer home to Admiral Robert E. Peary, spend a half day exploring some of the closer islands, or join us for a sunset paddle to enjoy the light, wildlife, and tranquil waters of the evening.
Harpswell is located along Maine's southwest coast, only 45 minutes north of Portland and 2 1/2 hours from Boston.
DAY TRIPS
Pack your lunch, bring your camera, and get ready to immerse yourself into a sea kayaking adventure that is sure to be the highlight of your vacation. Our full day tours begin at 9 am and finish up around 4 pm, giving us plenty of time to explore so many of the special sights and views offered in the Harpswell area. A favorite destination is a trip out to Eagle Island, once the summer home to Arctic explorer, Admiral Robert E. Peary, and now a state park open to the public. The expansive lawn overlooking Casco Bay provides not only panoramic views of the bay but a wonderful picnic spot. Wander through Admiral Peary's home open to the public and see artifcats from his many trips to the North Pole, read newspaper articles about his adventures and learn how he lived. And, to top it off, you can wander the walking trails that run around the perimeter of the island, enjoying the flowers, wild roses, and sounds of the waves and birds. Open to all levels of paddlers.
